DIDGERIDOO is an ancient musical instrument used by Indigenous Australians in traditional ceremonies, reportedly with a history of over four thousand years. The production method of this instrument is to cut the wooden pole eroded by termites into pipes of more than one meter, and then apply carving and paint color totems on the outside. To produce sound, the musician must also learn a technique called Circular Breathing in order to produce waves of ups and downs in rhythm.
Australian musician Simon 7 attempts to reinterpret DIDGERIDOO by incorporating postmodern art styles and recording multiple albums featuring this ancient instrument. The latest one is titled ‘Collective Unconsciousness’ and has been released worldwide as a live tour, attracting audiences seeking different tastes.
Simon7 was once a musician who played electric guitar and toured London and New York for eight years before searching of a breakthrough and creating different musical styles. He suddenly realized that his traditional instrument was worth promoting and could be further developed. Therefore, he applied his knowledge in popular music to incorporate “Didgeridoo” into the score and rhythm, and thus created a unique music.
Simon7 played “Didgeridoo” and publicly performed at seasonal concerts in New York City. He is also a member of the Mecca Bodega band, which composed the soundtrack for the HBO TV series “Subway Story”.
In Simon7’s DIDGERIDOO album series, there is also a female singer named Lisa Hunt who serves as a vocalist. She started her singing career in the church choir and also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in vocal music from the City College of New York.
